Still a very nice copy, in the best condition that we have seen of this edition. ; The fifth edition of the New Testament in Maori (the first was in 1837). This copy is of interest both because of the superior binding and because of its provenance as belonging to Sarah Wanklyn. The binding is a contemporary full morocco binding, with gilt dentelles and gilt decoration to the edges of the boards. All page edges gilt. Pale yellow endpapers. Binder's ticket in corner of front endpaper"Williams&Norgate / London". Contemporary inscription on front endpaper:"Sarah Wanklyn with the best wishes of her affectionate Uncle Jas Jackson / Jan 21st 1853". Sarah Wanklyn was the wife of Bishop William Leonard Williams (1829-1916). William Leonard Williams, like his father Bishop William Williams (1800-1878), was a missionary and student of the Maori language. Pagination: [iv], 371, [1] pages. Page dimensions: 211 x 131mm.
